| Mosaic offers 4 approaches | • Sketches – written and performed by Mosaic to highlight issues and provoke discussion • Forum theatre – an improvised scene performed by Mosaic, inviting interaction from the participants to help to resolve a situation. • Role play – a chance for the participants to practice their interpersonal skills in a safe environment and receive constructive feedback from role players and facilitators. • Sometimes a video/DVD clip is shown to present an issue as well as entertainment. | | “Theatre communicates with the whole person – not just with our thinking and reason. It appeals to our emotions, passions and prejudices” (Extract from “Footsteps” published by Tearfund) “What I hear, I forget, what I see, I remember, what I do, I understand” (Chinese proverb) | |
| How we work |
After consultation with the client, we decide which approach or approaches will be the most appropriate. We will then prepare sketches or role play scenarios to be used in the workshop or training course. The drama is always followed by discussion and further exploration of the issues that are raised. It is used alongside other creative tools such as cartoons and murals to provide the participants with an all round learning experience that is highly interactive, entertaining, energising and educational. |
| Examples of what we have done so far |
Sketches and monologues have been used in our workshops on volunteer management and good governance to highlight the following issues: |
1. Raising awareness of the causes and responses to poverty and injustice 2. Recruitment and personal development of volunteers 3. Managing change and conflict within volunteer teams 4. Retention and motivation 5. Managing growth and accountability within and organisation 6. The role of the trustee | |
Forum theatre has been used in training aid workers in facilitation skills We have used role play in our volunteer management workshops to allow participants the opportunity to practice their interpersonal skills in understanding the motivation of volunteers and using this information to achieve a task. Clips from ‘Billy Elliot’ and ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ have been used to introduce the themes of motivation and committee meetings. |
